Why dont they apply this to stop lights? If a stop light could “ pay attention to hundreds of objects at once, 360 degrees in all directions ” that are approaching a given intersection it can make the best choice on how to dictate the flow traffic, saving the whole world time, and gas...and consequently the ozone layer.

But instead we continue to use the archaic timed intervals/box sensors that dont take into account the gaps between one car and the next or the type of vehicle for that matter...

point and case; there is a light half way up a hill down the road from my house, durring rushour big rigs cause mile long lines. Why? Cause they weigh a shit ton so getting up the hill after you have been forced to come to a complete stop takes ages plus legitimate fast & furious shifting... Or my favorite, cause you cant blame big rigs for physics, the idiot driver that left 1 car length in front of them before the box sensor recognized that there are more cars coming. On a good day the light lets 5 cars go before changing. #mindthegappeople

Best part about this rant.... I work from home.

I approve this message.

There outside my neighborhood are two intersections less than 1000 ft apart. The first is at the crest of a hill and all but one direction has a curve approaching it, so sightlines are poor at best. There are only 2 turn lights for this intersection and those are the directions that can actually see what’s coming at them, the other directions just have to guess and pray to make left hand turns.

Less than 1000 ft away is a T-intersection. This one has a turn only light for the side that has sightline over 1/2-3/4 of a mile and sees very little traffic except for evening rush hour. I run this light routinely.

What I am saying is this: Intelligent Traffic Lights would go a long way towards improving traffic flow, etc. and assist in the mix of autonomous and people driven cars.

This is brilliant! I remember waiting at the ( that’s right THE ) traffic light in my town at 3am for no reason at all. No one else was on the road.

Since it was THE traffic light, I am sure THE deputy on duty had nothing to do but to watch for people who became too frustrated and ran the stupid thing.
